Reading during the holiday

To all parents / caregivers,

What a great term 2. I think everyone in Room 16 deserves a good two week break so they are ready and raring to go for term 3 and our Operetta!

I have stapled the note below into your child's reading log. It contains their personal username and password so they can log into Sunshine Classics.

I hope everyone has a great holiday and see you in two weeks.

Reading during the holiday

Well done everyone in Room 16 for all your hard work in Term 2. You have all made progress in reading. It is important to continue reading - even in the holidays; books at home, from the library as well as reading material online.

I have set up an account for each of you on Sunshine Classics. There are eight books for you to listen to, read and even record yourself reading as well as reading activities to do.

This is not something you have to do but hopefully something you will want to do during the two week holiday. For those who do not have access to the internet at home, perhaps a friend or family member does and Hamilton City Libraries have free internet access.

Healthy breakfasts

This week Erin from Project Energize came into Room 16 to talk to us about making good breakfast choices. We talked about how we feel when we are hungry and all agreed it made us tired and grumpy and made it hard for us to learn.

We learnt that we do not want too much sugar at breakfast time as it will give us lots of energy straight away but then we will quickly lose all the energy, making us tired before morning tea time. It is also bad for our teeth and in Room 16 many of us are growing our grown up teeth so we need to make sure we look after them well! We also learnt that we do not want too much fat either as too much fat can build up around our heart and make it hard to beat properly.

We were all surprised to hear that some breakfast choices are actually really bad to eat all the time like Nutri-Grain and Coco Pops as about 1/3 it is sugar. As we have been learning all about fractions in Room 16, we know that 1/3 is quite a lot. Also some breakfast choices like natural muesli actually have sugar added to it so they look healthy but are not as healthy as Weet-Bix or porridge - but natural muesli is still better than toasted muesli.

It was also interesting to learn that it is important to eat enough so that you are full until morning tea. Cornflakes with milk for example is not enough food by itself and should be topped up with either fruit, yogurt or something else to eat like toast.

It is said that 'Breakfast is the most important meal of the day' as it starts our day properly for learning and we all like learning in Room 16.

Popping Popcorn

Today we had popcorn made by Mr Duck. Darryl took some interesting photos of Mr Duck heating the popcorn kernels until they popped making popcorn. The popcorn spat out of his mouth and it looked like he was spewing!  We added salt and sugar to try and give the natural popcorn some extra flavour. It didn't really work. Next time we need to add butter so that the salt and sugar can stick to the popcorn. It was still really yummy. Thank you Mr Duck.

These are words we came up with to describe
what the popcorn taste like:

Creative writing workshop with author Talia Evered

We loved our creative writing workshop with author Talia Evered today. We joined Room 13 for a whole block of stories, laughter and silliness!

Talia read her first book, "I wonder what I can wonder in my wardrobe". We enjoyed all the crazy things and animals that were lurking inside and asked Talia some questions about being an author and where you get your ideas from. This is Talia's website if you want to know more about her and her books: http://www.splurgy.co.nz/

After creating our own imaginary story together as a group, about three elephants with wings, we were ready to think like real authors.

Room 16 will now be thinking, planning, writing, recrafting, illustrating and publishing our own stories before the end of this term.

Again, thank you to everyone who helped us pay for this workshop. We actually have quite a bit of money left over so watch this space to see how we decide on how to spend the rest of the money.

Room 16's Sponsored Walk

Well done Room 16 for trying so hard and never giving up during our sponsored walk on Tuesday 3rd June. They walked for a whole hour around Putikitiki and everyone walked more than 10 laps - Subair did 20 laps so he walked 5km (1 lap = 1/4 km).

A huge thank you to Room 9, our amazing buddy class, who came along to help us. They walked with us, providing support and checking all of Room 16 followed the no running and no skipping cones rule (if you did you got a 10 second on the spot penalty!). Room 9 also filmed most of this video below.

We all had lots of fun. I am very proud of all the students that took part.

Hopefully all of the sponsorship money will be brought into school over the next week, ready for our creative writing workshop with Talia Evered on Wednesday 18th June. Thank you very much to all the family and friends who have sponsored children in Room 9.

Knit World on Victoria Street very kindly donated lots of scarves to our school so we can be warm this winter. We wanted to thank them so wrote thank you cards. After a process of draft writing, best copy then publishing, we created a thank you book.

All writing, illustrations and publishing created by Room 16 Hamilton East School.
