Room 16's Sponsored Walk

Well done Room 16 for trying so hard and never giving up during our sponsored walk on Tuesday 3rd June. They walked for a whole hour around Putikitiki and everyone walked more than 10 laps - Subair did 20 laps so he walked 5km (1 lap = 1/4 km).

A huge thank you to Room 9, our amazing buddy class, who came along to help us. They walked with us, providing support and checking all of Room 16 followed the no running and no skipping cones rule (if you did you got a 10 second on the spot penalty!). Room 9 also filmed most of this video below.

We all had lots of fun. I am very proud of all the students that took part.

Hopefully all of the sponsorship money will be brought into school over the next week, ready for our creative writing workshop with Talia Evered on Wednesday 18th June. Thank you very much to all the family and friends who have sponsored children in Room 9.

Knit World on Victoria Street very kindly donated lots of scarves to our school so we can be warm this winter. We wanted to thank them so wrote thank you cards. After a process of draft writing, best copy then publishing, we created a thank you book.

All writing, illustrations and publishing created by Room 16 Hamilton East School.

Strike Percussion

We loved the Strike Percussion performance at our school today.

Whaea Eve and Mrs O'Neill got to have a drum solo!

Before the show we thought about all the different instruments that we might see in the percussion performance. Afterwards we remembered the instruments that were actually in the show.

We learnt that percussion includes lots of drums and drumming!

Read below some of the great writing Room 16 produced
after the show:

I sat down. Suddenly I heard a big loud bang! It was so loud I thought that symbols were next to my ear.
Katelyn

At the percussion show I felt the drumming. It felt like an earthquake.
Faisal

I was on the stage and my heart was beating deep and sharp. It felt as if something was swallowing me.
Deysharn

When they played the drums I could feel thunder in my body.
David

I thought that they were going to burn each other. How did they make the fire shoot off the stick?
Cruz

I liked the drumming. It felt like a car crash.

Room 16 performs What I am

In Friday's Positive Assembly Room 16 performed a new song to the school. It is the Will.i.am What I am song from Seseme Street. It is a fun song that encourages us to be stronger and be the best you that you can be. We made up the actions to the song and hope you enjoy watching it.

Making hot air balloons

Why were we making hot air balloons:
  • We were making hot air balloons because this balloon below was on Dawson Park this morning.

How to make hot air balloons:

    What you need:
    • ·     A plastic bag
    • ·     String
    • ·     A paper cup
    • ·     A hair dryer

    What you do:
    • ·     Cut the string into four pieces of the same length.
    • ·     Put four holes at the top of the paper cup.
    • ·     Thread a piece of string through each of the holes in the cup.
    • ·     Tie two pieces of string to one of the handles of the plastic bag.
    • ·     Tie the other two pieces of string to the other handle of the plastic bag.
    • ·     Put the hair dryer under the hole of the plastic bag.
    • ·     Turn the hair dryer on.
    • ·     Let go of the plastic bag.

What is the difference between a hot air balloon and a parachute?
    • ·     A hot air balloon goes up and a parachute goes down.

Was it easy to make a hot air balloon?
    • ·     It is easy to make because you just poke it through the hole and tie it to the plastic bag.
    • ·     No because the threading was too hard.
    • ·     No is wasn’t because it was hard to put the string through the holes because the string was fatter than the holes.

Our afternoon with our buddy class Room 9

On Thursday we had a lovely afternoon getting to know our buddy class Room 9. First of all we got into pairs or small groups to do buddy reading.

Then we moved up to the top courts and played a getting to know names game. This was a great way to get to know each other and also got us thinking about throwing and catching, our next PE unit.

Room 9, we look forward to spending more time with you this year!
